A couple late thoughts: I happened to flip over to CNN at 10:25 PM ET, with the chyron that the speech was scheduled to start at 10:30. I know that the three networks flipped at around 10:45, which is IIRC when CNN finally admitted out loud what the news was. The speech itself didn't hit until around 11:30. I would have loved to be a fly on the wall in the five newsrooms as the minutes ticked away, waiting for the cue from the White House, and they all had to vamp for 45 minutes.
Secondly, Brian Williams was on David Letterman last night, and I love Williams. And I know everyone was in full jingoism mode for the last 24 hours. But, for some reason, where I thought Letterman hit the right note in 2001, I thought he and Williams were just spectacularly off key (though obviously not in the eyes of the audience). It felt almost too angry between the two of them, each seemingly feeding off the other, in a way I rarely see Williams when he's on Daily Show, for instance. I really was hoping Letterman would try to go just a little more big picture at that moment, but he didn't. Finally, I think all you need to know about the larger statement of how pathetic the CBS News brand is is that, the day after a massive news story, Katie Couric was not only not on the air but not even invited on her own network's late night program.
