But I *think* another distinction with "The Great Simpsina" and "The Ned-liest Catch" is that there wasn't even the final shot of the TV with Groening, Simon and Brooks listed as creators. Those credits are shifted to the first seconds of the episode. If it's more than just these two episodes, I think it's been a long time since it happened (possibly the 138th Episode Spectacular?)

No, there have been a number of episodes over the years that began with literally only the "The Simpsons" title, then straight into the episode. (The episode earlier this season was unusual because it didn't even have the title at the beginning.) Yes, whenever they do it, it's because the episode itself runs long, so they buy some time by shortening the opening. No conspiracy, other than the fact that Fox has shortened the show length a bit over the years (to add more commercials), which they've mentioned on DVD commentaries. I would actually not be surprised if, in reruns, the "interactive" announcement at the end is essentially replaced by a longer version of the opening titles. -- Jim Ellwanger <[email protected]> <http://www.ellwanger.tv> -- TV or Not TV ....
