It depends on what season they're airing. There is at least one season out there that they used such a theme. Nick @ Nite aired them that way about 10 years ago or so ago. I think it's the 1967-68 year, I'd have to pull my tapes to find out for sure. I don't think it's a substitution, because some of the episodes I've seen had the regular theme, and others didn't. The typestyle for Dragnet on those episodes is odd as well.

I DVRed the show tonight, and while it's exactly as I remember it (which I find delightful; others' mileage may vary ...), there's no music. Even the "Danger Ahead/"Dum-de-dum-dum" theme is missing, replaced by a tympani beating out the tune's rhythm. Even the score into and out of commercial is a very ominous tympani; nothing else. I can't imagine that Universal wouldn't spring for the rights for even the theme, but that what it seems to be. Can anyone else think of a show that went into syndication minus its own theme song? (I'm excepting examples from the 60s like "The Dick Van Dyke Daytime Show" or the syndie version of "The Jack Benny Show" that ran contemporarily with new episodes). --Dave Sikula -- TV or Not TV ....
