Not the winner, but the initial selection was voice-only. The four
judges are actually "coaches" that are to build teams of eight singers
(or duos) each. When they like what they hear, they hit a Game Show
Big Red Button on their desk/big chair, the chair swivels around and
the "I WANT YOU" light comes on. If more than one coach hits the
button, they each make their case and the contestant selects their
fate. If no one swivels around, the contestant is out.

In the second round, each coach (who has brought along an assistant to
help them--Blake Shelton's is none other than Reba McIntire,
Christina's is Aussie singer-songwriter Sia, Cee-Lo's is the 90s R&B
singer Monica and Adam Levine's is the "musical director" of Maroon 5)
picks two of his/her team to do a duet on the same song with a live
band in front of an audience. The other coaches can offer comments,
but the coach who made the pairing (with the help of his assistant)
must make the decision who goes on to the final rounds from his team.
This culls the teams down from eight to four.

Starting next week, the final four from each team face off against
each other in the live shows, at which point "The Voice" becomes just
like "Idol" and the similar shows in that the viewers will make the
final decisions by voting. The main difference here is besides the
recording contract for the winning singer, the coach has bragging
rights if his/her team spawned the winner.

And that is why I wondered why NBC would give "The Voice" the coveted
post-Super Bowl slot when the first season has yet to play its end
game and the Nielsens have yet to indicate whether the public will
stay until the bitter end.
