IIRC, what began happening in Vancouver was that people in that target audience 
started complaining that other outlets were "revealing" the results (i.e., 
behaving like a normal news organization). The best part was that they were 
complaining to NBC.

You're right that they are unlikely to be hitting ESPN. But they are likely to 
be hitting their CBS affiliate or local newspaper, neither of which feels 
compelled to post spoiler alerts. I'd also say that this situation has 
effectively boiled down to four sports: figure skating, gymnastics, 
track/athletics, and swimming/diving. Most everything else is pushed live (NBCU 
learned that with the US hockey run last year).
