I haven't seen the show yet (didn't grab tickets in time, but I did download
the score from Amazon last night for $2), but all indications are that it
treats the LDS chruch's teachings with a bit of tongue-in-cheek humor (as
was evident in the song performed at the Tonys last night, "I Believe"), but
doesn't portray the members of the church as wacky, crazy, or cultish (or,
at least, no more so than they behave in real life). Despite its pedigree
and a liberal amount of swearing (presumably by the non-LDS characters),
people are saying it's the most 'traditional' modern musical to come along
for some time.
