I caught an alert on CNN.com that the verdict was about to come in, so turned on the TV to watch it. I have not followed this case closely, but closely enough to expect a guilty verdict from such a short deliberation. Based on what I know I am pleased with the verdict, as every time a defendant that most of the public thinks is probably guilty is found not guilty due to a failure of the state to meets its burden of proof, our system of justice is strengthened (we don't rule by mob law). The "smell evidence" bordered on, if not crossed over into, junk science, and the sense that she murdered her baby rested mostly on the perception that she was a lying, self-indulgent, narcissistic woman-child. We may not like her, we may suspect she intentionally killed her child, but we need to meet a higher standard than that to deprive her of liberty and life.
As important for me was the comments of her lawyers in the post-verdict press conference, tearing the TV legal commentators a new asshole for their ignorant and self-aggrandizing commentary. On CNN Jeffrey Toobin made a point of noting (seemingly against the wishes of whoever was anchoring their coverage) that they were talking specifically about Nancy Grace, (who apparently but not surprisingly single-handedly turned this case into a circus). -- TV or Not TV ....
