The only part of the Piers Morgan story that has captured my attention (just
because I have always gotten a kick out of the fact that Louise Mensch is
actually an MP, and because I happened to be watching live as her part in
this unfolded) seems to have come full circle now. LM has finally apologized
to Morgan, and admitted that, in her questioning of the Murdochs on
worldwide television, in which she repeatedly stated as fact that Morgan had
bragged about his own hacking as the source for his own scoops in his own
book, not only was she wrong, but she never even read his book herself. She
was relying on an article in the Daily Telegraph - and she even misread that
article.

In the context of her line of questioning, Mensch (a Tory) seemed most
interested in refocusing the inquiry away from the Murdochs, and instead on
all of the British press, repeatedly stating that the kind of hacking that
had happened at the Murdoch's papers was common practice on Fleet Street.

"U.K. MP *Louise Mensch<http://www.mediabistro.com/Louise-Mensch-profile.html>
* has apologized to CNN anchor *Piers
Morgan<http://www.mediabistro.com/Piers-Morgan-profile.html>
* over claims she made in parliament saying that Morgan admitted to getting
a scoop by phone hacking. Mensch made the comments during the Parliamentary
hearings with *James
Murdoch<http://www.mediabistro.com/James-Murdoch-profile.html>
* and *Rupert Murdoch<http://www.mediabistro.com/Rupert-Murdoch-profile.html>
*. As she acknowledged in her formal apology, she confused what was written
in a news item for what Morgan claimed.

In my questions to Rupert and James Murdoch and Rebekah Brooks, I wrongly
stated that Piers Morgan, formerly editor of the Daily Mirror, had been open
about personally hacking phones in a book he wrote. This was based on my
misreading of an article in the Daily Telegraph published on the 13th July,
which covered Mr. Morgan’s description in his book of how to hack a phone
and how he won the Scoop of the Year on the story of Sven-Goran Eriksson and
Ulrika Johnson. The Telegraph report covers the claim of a blogger that this
story was acquired by phone hacking, and I misread that as Mr. Morgan
himself claiming this to be true. Therefore, I must apologise to Mr. Morgan
and the Committee for this error about his book.

When Mensch and Morgan appeared on CNN together, Morgan tried to get her to
repeat her claims, only to have her invoke Parliamentary privilege in saying
that she could
