MacFarlane appeared at the BBC Proms (big annual classical music festival
with orchestras from the UK and the world) in 2009 singing songs from the
classic MGM musicals. He's annoyingly good. Last year he did a TV special
over here again singing musicals. Around the time of his 2009 appearance, he
gave an interview to The Guardian:

He claimed that at the time it was only his shows and The Simpsons that used
a full orchestra in TV.

His Prom is even available on DVD:

Note, in case you're thinking of purchasing - you may well need a region
free DVD player to view!

As for his new Cosmos? We'll have to reserve judgement. The original series
only got a DVD release finally in the UK last year, and I snapped it up.
