It would seem that Top Gear US and Top Gear UK have traversed a similar, if not identical, stretch of California desert in their recent episodes. And I'm thinking of the same stretch of gravel/rock 'road'.
Highly speculative on my part, but I think James May traveled over the stretch during tonight's (in the U.S.) film, while one of the three U.S. hosts bottomed out on that stretch during their recent cheap 4X4 challenge.
