Well, in both cases the challenge involved 4WD vehicle(s) going from the Mojave 
Desert to Las Vegas, so I don't consider this either cheating or cheap.  The US 
show has taken pains to not copy the mothership when they tackle similar 
topics, and I think they succeed.  This would seem to be the first instance of 
the US film being first.

That saves plenty on production costs. One local crew who are aware of the 
house style off filming, one helicopter hired etc. It saves on budgets for all 
concerned.
