I am not a huge Murphy fan, but this makes more sense than it might first
appear, as explained in the article. He has two movies coming out in advance
of the Oscars, at least one of which (directed by Ratner and staring Ben
Stiller) seems poised to be be a commercial hit. Murphy is a stand-up, and
while his act (at least the old versions I did see a few times) is too dirty
for TV, he knows how to tone it down, and is described in the article as one
of the biggest cross over performers in Hollywood, and also does very well
internationally. And given his SNL days, he has more experience performing
on live television than all but a handful of other actors. I guess they
could have gone with Will Ferrel or Adam Sandler, though at this point in
his career Murphy is probably more family friendly than either one of those,
and Eddie at least has an Oscar nomination on his resume. I can only think
of one other person who I might guess turned Ratner down before he asked
Murphy - Stiller, who I would much prefer to see do the show (and doesn't he
like hold the record for selling the most movie tickets in human history?).
