I recall when the name/format change occurred.

At the end of the day, as is now evidenced by internet video, it
doesn't take much to produce a basic TV show. I recall in college when
the air conditioning went out in the campus' TV studio where we would
produce a live newscast. Everybody panicked as the light grid started
-- well -- exploding, but it happened to be a rare, sunny day in the
state of Washington. We moved the gear outside... I mean it was just a
desk, chairs, some microphones, and a few cameras. It actually looked
amazing in comparison to the low-light studio we normally used.

Cut to the present day, and engineers are no longer needed to sync
cameras because it is done automatically. Thanks to the digital
revolution, transmission can be handled off-site by one guy in a
basement, who can route video anywhere. HD cameras no longer require
high end lighting and most have built in audio gear.

This is why I still don't consider Fox to be a network in the same
sense that ABC, CBS, and NBC are. They provide two hours of prime time
six days a week and a few sports events. They have no network news
unless they pipe in press conferences via their non-news cable
network. It would take no effort on Fox to add an hour of programing
here and there, and a newscast would be so f-ing easy.
