Well, the State Department did wise up and insist that Top Gear was not a documentary, but an entertainment program.
Clarkson actually strikes me as a pseudo-libertarian with a fascist streak. The English equivalent of the Yanks that bemoan the rejection of American exceptionalism. But your mileage may vary. Although I think there is a clear difference in meaning between a conservative in the UK versus a conservative in the US. Besides, if you watch Top Gear you know he has stated that school teachers, bendy-bus drivers, lorry drivers, the elderly, caravan drivers, the French, and his co-hosts all needed to be shot.
