To my everlasting and well deserved shame, I have to admit that I actually
am familiar with the show, and the names of the people mentioned in the
story. I think Finke is stretching it a bit to describe the first season's
ratings as "so-so". They were lower than predicted, but the show was still
a winner for Fox. I don't really know what these kinds of shows are trying
to be - it did seem clear that the host was not working at all. They
Pussycat singer, who I had not heard of before I saw her on this show, is
pretty (or rather, has one very appealing physical feature) but even in a
context in which obnoxious personality is apparently a job requirement, she
redlined the scale. Abdul lives on the red line of obnoxiousness, but I
don't think that is what got her canned here. Having her with Cowell wound
up not rekindling the chemistry from Idol, but reminding people every week
that they were not watching Idol. I don't know how this show has worked in
GB, but the example from the NBC singing show (the one that will start
again after the Super Bowl, I forget the name now) and to some extent even
Idol seems to suggest that these shows benefit from having a few judges who
can actually still sing themselves, and perform top selling songs of their
own. Will not at all be surprised to see one and maybe two female diva
types on this show.
