The problem is that the talent comps are the only mass appeal shows left on television, if "mass appeal" means "15M+ viewers." Everything else has become so balkanized that it's totally understandable why the nets are trying to clone "Idol" a decade after the fact. (That's the other thing--"Idol"'s showing signs of ratings weakness and "The Voice" has become so big that everyone now wants to get in on the act.)
