Subject: Re: [TV orNotTV] Was it too much to expect that Celebrity
Apprentice would have a "satisfying ending"?

Your contestant beat mine, so I don't have a dog in this hunt. I didn't
watch one second of the series as I told you I wouldn't, and only recently
did I realize Arsenio was on this season. I know I don't need to tell you
that reality TV isn't real, that certain contestants will always have a
production advantage. The singing shows are the easiest for producers to rig
by the order of performance, choice of songs they can and can't get the
rights to, wardrobe, lighting, etc.
But In a show like Celeb Apprentice where it essentially boils down to one
of the most amoral men in the world of business firing people, you can't
expect fairness or logic.

I couldn't stand Arsenio's talk show. He pandered too much and hid a genuine
sense of humor in favor of a "cool" monologue with barking dogs. But a few
years back, when LA had an FM talk station, Arsenio was a weekly cohost with
Tim Conway Jr and I'd stack their radio shows up against any other -- they
were fun to listen to and very insightful. A few weeks ago Arsenio was a
guest on Real Time and he spoke eloquently about being forced to host his
talk show while the LA riots were going on (it was the 20th anniversary). In
short, I'm a fan of Arsenio's now in a way I wasn't back when he was
popular.

I won't dispute your assessment of the situation -- that Clay got a raw
deal, and that the winner was chosen to hype another corner of the
mega-studio. All I will say is that if I was ever forced at gunpoint to
compete on that show, I would consider it an honor not to win. In other
words, Clay Aiken won by losing... this would be the second time he's done
that, if memory serves.
