What I have noticed about this recession is that almost literally 1 in 10 people that I know have lost their job, or have graduated from college and not been able to find a full-time job. The only encouragement I can offer is that, in the teeth of this recession, and perhaps because of how closely we have all been touched by it, I also know lots of people who have lost their job, and then found another one. My sister was laid off 9 months ago, went through 4 months of terrifying hell, and then found another job in her field (though for lower salary than before). So people are hiring, and I think what we have noticed is that canny employers are kind of 'buying on the dip" - knowing that there are an unusually high number of well-qualified workers in the unemployed population right now, that can be had for a relatively cheap price and can be long term assets. If I were a decision-maker at a fundamentally strong organization, I would invest in hiring qualified people now, even ahead of a full recovery, because it talented employees are often the most difficult thing for an organization to find. Even though I have tenure I came uncomfortably close to losing my job this month, and spent some time looking into the maw of unemployment in this environment. Not a pretty picture. I am sure I join the entire list in keeping a good thought for you Kevin. -- TV or Not TV .... The Smartest (TV) People!
