I only want to comment on this part since I don't have much to add to
what others contributed. Your daughter needs a contingency plan for
the last week of the Olympics in case none of her other possibilities
pan out. She can want and hope that things work out for that week but
it would be foolish to be out on the street and looking for a place to
stay and even the expensive options are all booked up.

My suggested Plan B would be to find somewhere outside of London. With
London getting all of the tourists and their money, other cities
should have smaller crowds and more reasonable accommodations. Adam
suggested Cambridge and that would be an ideal place. An hour away
from London if she wants to take day trips or she could find quieter
things to do locally. A more distant possibility would be the Lake
District.

One place I haven't seen mentioned as a place to visit in the London
area is the Royal Observatory in Greenwich. It has been recommended to
me as a place worth visiting, though it might be mobbed at Olympic
time.
