Because we have the benefit of hindsight, it's easier to make your characters appear sharper because they pick up on every little aspect of the BP Oil Spill that very few people could know about without a lot of reading and research.
And really, he is already teeing off on straw men. He can't have real politicians on Newsnight, so he has to fictionalize it. I must say that I do enjoy the show, it's just weird sometimes watching it.
