The public radio program provider began in 1982 when Minnesota Public Radio bought two weekly hours of time on the NPR satellite to air nationally a little show called "A Prairie Home Companion" (after then-NPR president Frank Mankiewicz proclaimed that no one outside of Minnesota would understand the show)--it broke off from MPR about a decade ago but continues to be the provider of such familiar shows as "The World," "This American Life," several CBC programs including "As It Happens" and "Michael Feldman's Whad'ya Know?"--even though the Boston radio and TV station and major PBS program supplier will own the net, it will continue to be based in Minneapolis (MPR and its syndication arm American Public Media are in St. Paul): http://www.pri.org/stories/business/nonprofits/public-radio-international-acquired-by-boston-public-broadcaster-wgbh-10840.html Interestingly enough, the midday news show from WGBH's crosstown pubradio rival WBUR, "Here and Now," is distributed by PRI. That may change sooner or later.
