Mark Thompson (no relation to either half of LA's Mark and Brian or LA weatherman/voice of Fox reality shows) returned to the Beeb in 2004 to become director general coming out of an alleged scandal in the news department, has a solid track record, including journalism, most of it at the BBC, but not much of a print track record (the NYT has sold all of its radio and TV holdings in recent years), which makes him an unusual choice, if not for the Beeb's successes in online media: http://www.thewrap.com/media/article/new-york-times-co-names-mark-thompson-new-ceo-52036
