Final set of podcasts are up. For a Southern California native, this
was a hard, painful, tear-jerking four and a half hours of radio. It
was goodbye.

Both Mark & Brian announced separate podcasts they will be doing, and
it was fitting one of the final guests on the show was Jim Ladd, also
formerly of KLOS who was fired and now hosts a show on SiriusXM.
Folks, radio is officially dead in LA. The corporate stations don't
garner the loyalty or respect of musicians or listeners. Mark & Brian
were favorites of mine, but they also outlasted Rick Dees and Howard
Stern and all the shock jocks and all the format changes and all the
other crap. That they are electing to walk away is very telling. In
Jim Ladd's book he wrote about how radio was our generation's tribal
drum, our community gathering place. The loss of this radio show -- as
much as the loss of Jim Ladd's evening show -- really signals the
silence of that drum. It is amazing how strangers can affect so many
people and make them feel like a part of something just by listening.
With all the new technology emerging, we seem mindful of the loss of
the old media like records and cassettes and now CDs are products of a
bygone era. But imagine in 20 years when you're sitting on a porch
saying, "Back in my day, we had DJs who loved music and dedicated
themselves to nurturing new talent, embracing artistic legacy, and
genuinely caring about the community they served."

KLOS started its lack of commitment when it cancelled "Local Licks" a
few years back, which was a great showcase for LA indie rock talent.
It then dropped its community affairs talk show "Impact" with Frank
Sontag (part of the M&B) family. Then it started laying off veteran
jocks and behind-the-scenes people, from Rita Wilde to Jim Ladd.
Without Mark & Brian, KLOS has no more ties to the city (Joe Benson is
still on board, but he is kept on the shortest possible leash). I have
no idea what they will air Monday at 6am, but I know it will not be in
the best interests of Los Angeles, rock & roll, or me personally.

Bye bye LA radio.
