My Facebook page exploded today with three or four people making very similar arguments against any increased regulation of private gun ownership, to wit: "instead of trying to trample on the second amendment, we should instead be having a serious debate about the failures of the mental health system".
I did have a very robust, but mostly respectful and productive conversation over the about 14 hours yesterday, with participation from more than a dozen people, about gun regulation, so the comments this morning were not unwelcome or out of the blue. But they were surprisingly concordant in both the content of the argument, and even the phrases employed to make it. It got me to wondering.... I did not watch the Sunday morning news interview shows today, nor do I ever watch FN - is it possible this is an argument that is being pushed by televised conservatives today? I don't intend to hash out that argument here (indeed, my point has been there is nothing mutually exclusive about doing more to regulate guns *and* enhancing our mental health system. In California at least, our mental health system was gutted during 12 years of conservative governership, and as a former staff psychologist at one of our State Mental hospitals who worked with the criminally insane I would very much like to see more resources put back into that system). But I am interested in tracing back to the source of this surprisingly coordinated argument. -- TV or Not TV .... The Smartest (TV) People!
