I've been hearing the "Let's talk about mental health care instead of gun
control" thing from some of my circles on the left, too. It's like we've
decided as a country that gun control just too emotionally fraught a
problem to do anything but ignore it and hope it goes away.
"Mental illness" will be too vague to define. Anyone can be sane until the
soon-to-be-ex makes plans to take the kids cross-country, someone cuts you
off on the interstate, etc.
