This makes sense. But I guess my initial hypothesis here was that even over the course of the more cluttered, three-singing show environment (which I guess is really only the last 18 months) the AI contestants have been more successful. But as Melissa points out, that is mostly due to the success of Home by Phillips (thanks to Melissa for providing those details). And I guess the point is that it is fairly random that he got a good original song to sing (that I and many others still often confuse with Mumford), and that lightening could have just as easily struck a contestant on one of the other shows. Although I guess there is one difference, in that I think AI is the only one of the three that has the winner (and maybe the runner-up?) sing an original song near the end in front of that huge TV audience. That boost probably wont help a bad song, but it does give a good platform for a good one. (now that I think about it, it seems like The Voice did have original songs for the final contestants in maybe its first iteration, but I don't recall that in the last two). I guess if songwriters were sitting on sure-fire hits they would have already sold them to established acts and not save them on unknown quantities on talent shows. -- TV or Not TV ....
