I just had a chance to watch The Kennedy Center Honors; I had originally planned on just FF to the parts with Dave, but wound up watching the whole thing - a pretty great show.
As much as I looked forward to and enjoyed the Dave parts, the highlight of the program may well have been the segment honoring Buddy Guy. The Zeppelin tribute was also pretty great - I am not a LZ guy, but they were the dominant rock band of my high school years, and like Romano implied, in those days if you wanted half a chance to see one of your female classmates naked you had to out Stairway on. I doubt there is anyone who can play the guitar less competently than me, but I can play the first part of that song, and mastered the art of pausing when I had gotten as far as I knew how to play and looking soulfully at whatever girl I was trying to kiss. I am about the same age as the President, and I was not surprised to see him grooving during the Guy tribute; but if anything he seemed even more into the Zeppelin, especially Kravitz's Whole Lotta Love - which was the single musical highlight of the night for me, and Heart doing Stairway; and it was pretty cool to see the Zeps tear up, I assume mostly because of Bonham's son doing Stairway with Heart. But I tuned in for Dave, and I was not disappointed Regina Lasko looked genuinely happy behind Dave, and he seemed to be genuinely touched. All four of those honoring him did a good job (Fey, Baldwin, Romano and Kimmel), though Romano probably got off the line of the night (talking about not giving up after a failure, you don't give up if you lose the first game of the World Series <pause> you don't give up if you lose the first debate (look up to the balcony to a hysterical First Lady). One thing I think I noticed - I thought I heard Kimmel say that he remembered watching when Late Night premiered in February of 1983. Because of events in my own biography, I am pretty sure that Late Night started in 1982, which is confirmed by the wikis. I rewound the DVR to double-check, and I am pretty sure Kimmel said 1983, which seems odd because Kimmel is a certified Letterman fanatic - enough so that now I am wondering if both my memory and the wikis are wrong and Kimmel was right? -- TV or Not TV ....
