Yes, it's a bit of a spin down the ol' cable dial to find TV One (though
it's on second level packages on DirecTV and Comcast), but it's still out
there. They have an original series called "Belle's" about "an upscale
Atlanta soul-food restaurant owned and operated by the widowed, patriarch
Big Bill Cooper." They had an episode involving one of the daughters of the
lead character finding and dating an atheist. They treated it with the
level of sensitivity one might find in an Amos & Andy episode.

I have more than enough family and friends who are either atheists or very
close enough to it. I'm well aware this country is so fucked up when it
comes to religion that even trying to have an adult conversation about it
is probably the least likely thing to happen. And I'm also aware the
African-American community* (for which this network targets: as I type
this, they're in the middle of a three-hour morning Martin marathon) are
quickly becoming possibly the biggest bunch of hypocrites when it comes to
other groups that don't match their belief system (see: LGBTQ rights).

* I choose that word deliberately, because I'm very well aware that not all
see things that way, but perhaps those that don't should politely tell
their leadership to cork it.

That said: wow. The end lesson is that atheists are so horrible that they
deserved to be shunned like a disfellowed Jehovah's Witness. Replace that
with almost any religious or ethnic group or sexual orientation, and you'd
have an old-fashioned media circus on your hands. But atheism remains the
always-available whipping boy.
