Oh brother. This the kind of thing that drives me crazy about certain kinds of people who label themselves feminists. First of all, there is something seriously whack about putting a playful if sophomoric song about boobs in the same category as the joke about a physically abusive relationship. The first may be silly or even inappropriate (but I don't think it is), but I don't see any way in which it can be called misogynistic (only a moron would interpret that song as McFarlane arguing that the only valid role women have to play in the movies is to expose their breasts). One problem with this kind of puritanical overgeneralization is that it detracts from a more serious evaluation of his joke about Rihanna, which was one of my least favorite lines he used all night. Again, I don't think it can fairly be called misogynistic (unless that word is redefined as meaning anything that the most shrill and unreasonable self-styled feminist does not like), but if it does not cross the line of things one does not joke about, it comes pretty damn close. For my money, a joke like that either be a hell of a lot funnier to justify itself, or have some kind of edge or bite that brings the problem of domestic violence into sharper relief. But there will be no illuminating discussion or debate about that, because the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film has made the whole thing into their being offended at the use of the word boob. -- -- TV or Not TV ....
