Which is how everybody viewed Jay Leno during the days of Carson. Leno
would go to the local affiliates, promote the brand, be on-call for
whatever/whenever. Moreso than anything Helen Kushnick did
behind-the-scenes, Leno's willingness to do what Letterman wouldn't is
what landed him the Tonight Show. Letterman felt (and I think still
feels) his show should stand for itself, no marketing or embellishment
on his part required. If Fallon has adopted that puppy-dog aspect that
Leno had 30-years-ago, it makes some sense that NBC would be trying to
move him forward.
