Which is how everybody viewed Jay Leno during the days of Carson. Leno would go to the local affiliates, promote the brand, be on-call for whatever/whenever. Moreso than anything Helen Kushnick did behind-the-scenes, Leno's willingness to do what Letterman wouldn't is what landed him the Tonight Show. Letterman felt (and I think still feels) his show should stand for itself, no marketing or embellishment on his part required. If Fallon has adopted that puppy-dog aspect that Leno had 30-years-ago, it makes some sense that NBC would be trying to move him forward. -- Kevin M. (RPCV) -- -- TV or Not TV ....
