Guessing most have seen Carrey's Funny Or Die video making fun of gun
owners and supporters. It was obviously done to spark controversy from
exactly the sorts of people who took offense at it. I'll weigh in on a
few points; first, the video suffers from what Bill Maher often
suffers from, which is that in proving the point he wanted to prove,
he ended up being less funny (and less entertaining) than he wanted to
be. In this case I think Carrey wanted the uproar more than he wanted
the laugh. Personally, I thought the idea of a backup band comprised
entirely of celebrities shot and killed was a potent visual that got
lost amidst the Hee Haw parody, and the song itself just wasn't what
it could have been had the focus been more on the laughs (compare it
to Weird Al's "Christmas At Ground Zero" which was a stab against
nuclear weapons where the focus was on the laughs instead of the
politics). But though I didn't really care for the video, I'm elated
somebody is still trying to keep the issue of guns and gun violence at
the forefront since all the politicians who promised reform and the
public who pressed the issue seem to have already forgotten about dead
children. I just wish the issue could be kept alive (no pun intended)
without a mean-spirited song parody that only adds to the discord and
doesn't really contribute anything to the debate.
