It would seem that Spielberg and Lucas are essentially describing something
like the Fathom Events model, but on 'roids (with all of the associated back
acne...) and localized.

I've been to a few of these specialized film events, with either a satellite
linkup (a live "Wait Wait, Don't Tell Me" taping) or what I'm assuming are
DVD's or digital files plugged into the projection system (the roll-out of Star
Trek: The Next Generation season sets on Blu-Ray, the 'Black Dynamite' TV show
on Adult Swim, The Danny Boyle-directed Frankenstein play at the National
Theatre).  Tickets are more expensive than a regular evening ticket, but not by
much.  None of them have been more than twice a movie ticket, but there may
well be operas or other symphony kind of performances that approach the $50
ticket level and up.
