I know a couple people who work/have worked at KXAN and one of them says that their theory is that the person responsible for turning off the master control automation in the event that the game ran long was probably more focused on getting the other control room for the local news immediately following the game ready to go, since the combination of sudden-death OT and the game running long meant that it would start with a moment's notice.
That said, pre-scheduled commercials interrupting live broadcasts (particularly newscasts that run long due to severe weather or breaking news) seems to happen with some regularity on KXAN, so I wasn't terribly surprised when I saw the Facebook outrage start to pop up last night.
