While I was in the shower this morning, I came up with another reason why the judges were, as Alex said, "a little rough" that explains it to my own satisfaction.
Based on what I've learned in this group, the producers know how much each contestant will wager. Therefore, they'd know what the final scores would be for each contestant if they're correct or not. Had the three of them wagered based on the suggested wager calculator over at J-Archive.com,<http://www.j-archive.com/wageringcalculator.php?a=36600&b=9600&c=6400&player_a=Skyler&player_b=Thomas&player_c=Shuli>this would've been the chart of eight possible scenarios: <https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-YrlP18ojgVI/UgZyocSDkLI/AAAAAAAAA_c/NcUDL9Bbt84/s1600/Screen+shot+2013-08-10+at+11.57.35+AM.png> Obviously Skyler would've had a lock game. The problem was that Skyler broke Claven's Rule <http://www.j-archive.com/help.php#clavinsrule>. They wagered like this: <https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-apfX_rlyWIs/UgZzHCtUK5I/AAAAAAAAA_k/Y4RR9yjE-jc/s1600/Screen+shot+2013-08-10+at+11.59.34+AM.png> This meant that it was no longer a lock game: had Skyler answered incorrectly, he would've had to hope for a triple stumper to *tie* (which would've probably been one of the wildest endings in the history of the show). I think the judges were tipped off that the outcome of the game was actually in doubt. Since the judges don't know what the answers are until they're revealed, they would not have known that Skyler had answered correctly, so when Thomas's response was revealed, they had to go strictly with the rules because they didn't know how Skyler responded. While we knew after the fact it didn't matter, at that exact moment, it really did. -- -- TV or Not TV .... The Smartest (TV) People!
