The articles says "employees" rather than cast and crew. I assume the
staff, including writers, makeup artists and producers are employees of
Leno's production company and the crew are NBC employees. It's conceivable
for there to be something in Leno's parting agreement that makes sure that
NBC pays crew members whether or not they can place them on other shows,
but I think it is improbable. Paying the staff from February to September
seems reasonable because their chances of joining other shows in the middle
of the season is nil.

When I was last in New York I heard from someone in a position to know that
Leno's writers were talking about leaving the show at the end of this
summer. There was nothing against Jay - they just knew if they stuck it out
until February they would be looking at unemployment until the fall. This
agreement keeps them on board.
