I believe that's exactly his point. You don't see the latest iteration of the text that Google Groups is going to add to the chain, but you could definitely see the several previous non-snipped instances of it. He's asking us to remove the earlier instances, to help out the Digest users who have to wade through them.
I'm occasionally guilty, but I'm trying. :)

Google Groups adds that signature automatically, and only to e-mail/digest versions. We don't ever see it when using Google's interface, except if someone has responded via e-mail.--
