That was my understanding. When I read about the VIP Obits I assumed they
would all be bunched together either right before or after the regular
death reel. By spreading them out the way they did, it created a constant
somber tone - and I believe each one was right after an acceptance speech,
so after a while it was like, don't laugh too much (not that this was a big
threat), because the next thing that happens may be a eulogy for some well
beloved, dead-too-soon actor.

Of course, he could have been referencing the material.

I wanted to second Ed's observation about Bob Newhart - just the shot of
him standing with the accountants made me smile.
