I think I am missing the source of the outrage apparently felt by Slate.

Do we really think Ms. McCarthy should somehow have been photographed like
that? I think she looks great on the Elle cover. If the outrage is that she
did not make the newstand cover, well, it looks like three other skinny
girls missed out on that too - and as Slate itself notes, it is possible
Elle missed a bet, since McCarthy may have sold more magazines.

I don't think Elle deserves any special notice for including McCarthy, but
neither would I give them any special criticism for not photographing her
the same way they do Penelope Cruz.
