I have of course heard of this show, as it is referenced in pop culture
often recently, but I have never seen it, and don't really have any sense
of what kind of show it is (some kind of reality show about backwoods men
who make duck calls?). I don't care or have an opinion about the program.
But I do dispute what seems to be an assumption in the Time article, and in
much of the culture, which is that homophobia is an inherent and inevitable
part of being a committed Christian. This is simply not true. Homophobia is
correlated with Christian commitment, but not caused by it. The word
homosexuality does not appear in the Bible (old or new testaments) though
some modern translations to mistakenly use the word in a few places. There
are lots of committed Christians who are not homophobic. You can even think
homosexual behavior is a sin (which, again is a debatable inference that
has to be drawn from a very small percentage of Biblical texts) and not
believe that it is the equivalent of bestiality or terrorism.

These guys of course have the right to their beliefs, whatever they are;
but they can not use Christianity as a shield to protect them from charges
of homophobia, or the consequences of being homophobic.
