In the past few days, the internet has been abuzz with several stories of
bigotry and prejudice and plain ol' stupidity (the

hashtag
proved that a bigoted statement travels faster than a transcontinental
flight). One phrase bandied about this week that stuck with me is, "Freedom
of speech does not mean freedom from consequence." The duck dude had the
freedom to say stupid things, and society had the freedom to react to it.
The free market will determine whether his brand of stupidity is condoned
by the general public. I seriously doubt that black people or gay people
needed a reminder that discrimination is still a problem in America, but I
think many straight white folks are shocked by this. As a straight white
folk myself, I'm annoyed that I get lumped in with these people whenever
they mouth off. A recent post of mine on Twitter which lost me some
followers was when I wrote, "I mean this with all due respect, but if you
appear on a reality TV series I assume something is horribly wrong with you."
I wrote that, as someone who worked on reality TV, as someone with friends
who still work in the genre, as someone who applied to be on two reality TV
shows, and as someone who has helped others get on reality TV shows. I've
seen it from all sides; I believe it, and the duck dude certainly provides
evidence to support my claim.
