After 15 years, Clear Channel Media + Entertainment chair and CEO John Hogan is leaving the symbol for many of everything that is wrong in U.S. radio (even if their stations are in many markets the top-rated and top-revenue getting stations) and retiring--Bob Pittman, the man whose obit lead will be "the man who created MTV," resigned for five more years as chair and CEO of the main company CC Media Holdings:
http://www.billboard.com/biz/articles/news/radio/5869586/clear-channels-john-hogan-retires-bob-pittmans-contract-extended Pittman's main contribution at CC so far has been the creation and implementation of the IHeartRadio web site and service, something which will not warn the cockles of those people who believe that the only kind of radio is local DJs playing what they want to play (or at the least manipulating the playlist cards so they can get away with not playing "You Light Up My Life" again--of course, playlist cards are a dead species thanks to PC/Mac-based automation systems). But it's not all that surprising, considering that in Pittman's boy wonder days at WMAQ and WKQX in Chicago, the latter FM station because a ratings success while angering talent nationwide with one of the first uses of voice tracking 24/7--and when he moved to television, the same system was put in use at MTV, meaning that when you saw Martha and J.J. and Nina and Alan and Mark back then, they were almost certain to be on tape from a Manhattan studio far away from the master control room on Long Island. I should point out though, that at least the WKQX jocks were all in Chicago and not in various far-flung corners of the U.S. and this was when Ryan Seacrest was in the cradle in Georgia. -- -- TV or Not TV ....
