Two clarifications: 1. The ability for an umpire to "self-review" (my term) starts either once a team is out of challenges or the seventh, whichever is earlier. So if a manager challenges in the first inning and it's upheld, an umpire may self-review on behalf of that team at any point thereafter. However, if a manager has a challenge available, the umpires can't.
2. The fans won't be able to see the actual footage being reviewed at MLBAM. However, the restriction on showing multiple replays of close calls is lifted (previously teams were allowed to show a close call only once on a video board) Two flaws: 1. The onus remains on the manager to initial the reversal. While they will allow contact with a "video coordinator" in the clubhouse, why does MLB decide to go with the NFL and refuse to allow the head coach to actually see the play in question at a reasonable distance (i.e., not on the video board)? It's *that* hard to wire a dugout with a freaking TV? 2. Just like the NFL and NHL replay systems, that officials cannot effectively make an "I don't know" call. I've always felt that this puts too much pressure on the official because they have to call *something*, even if they're not sure, which then brings the "indisputable visual evidence" standard into play. It would be nice if officials could use replay to help them make calls as well as reviewing them.
