Basically, because that's where it's always aired (even if it's months 
after it airs on ITV in the UK), although PBS chief Paula Karger told press 
tour that airing it now keeps it away from the other fall series, allows 
the cast to cross the Atlantic to promote the series:

Meanwhile, the decision was made this year to air "Sherlock"'s third season 
only a few weeks after its BBC airing and back-to-back with "Downton" (I 
believe the first time two "Masterpiece" series have aired back-to-back on 
the same night, although some will say that it would've been "Mystery!" if 
the decision wasn't made to merge that franchise into "Masterpiece").
