Remarkably, the film industry seems to cope just fine sending its casts to all four corners of the planet to support a simultaneous or near-simultaneous global release schedule!
It seems to me that the more "genre" a series is, the closer you need to air the series to its original release strategy. Only a fool would delay Game of Thrones for more than a few days, or even The Walking Dead. Ditto Doctor Who. Fans in other territories will find "alternative means" to see them otherwise. On the other hand, an older skewing Downton? It's not always easy. In the UK, Channel 4 had been showing Agents of SHIELD in the same week as it airs on ABC (Friday nights at 8pm). But the traditional network airing schedule just breaks in the UK. We're just not used to taking random weeks off in the middle of a run - especially for holidays we don't celebrate. And there'd be viewer complaints if we just saw a re-run of an episode aired a couple of weeks earlier. So Channel 4 is now holding its fire, and hasn't aired the first couple of episodes from January to ensure it has a clean run through to the end of the season. Another reason that the cable model is better?
