There were two moments where I think Leno made mistakes: one small, one huge.
The small one was the widely mocked "Don't Blame Conan" speech, which David Letterman spectacularly eviscerated in a desk monologue around that time (transcript: https://docs.google.com/document/d/16Nn-CvMfUL06H__WsOzPectWgUra-Rjf06TMAXLKHR4/edit?usp=sharing). That was just silly. The bigger one, and the one that I think sealed the reputation he has, was not trying to kill the 11:35/12:05 solution when it first bubbled up. Had he said to NBC, "Look, you fucked up, but this is a spectacularly bad idea", it would've at least nipped the "Yeah, okay, but I'll be in the lobby, you know, if you..." stink he had on him and kept all the blame on NBC. It wasn't a mistake for him to taking 10:00. It wasn't a mistake going back to the Tonight show. I would've done things differently, but I'm not Jay Leno.
