What I got from this that I had not framed just that way before was that
Leno is the only network late night show of his era to have only had an
11:35 show. Like most of the article, and others of its kind, this is an
oversimplification, but there is something to that. If Leno had done a
12:35 show for 7 years before doing the Tonight Show he may have 1) had a
built-up momentum of cool that could have carried into his 11:35 show,
cutting his need to pander to the banal center and 2) as he aged and became
naturally less edgy, the public would still have the schema of his earlier
cool self to partially see him through.

As the article also notes, Leno did have a little of this, with his body of
work on Dave's show, but that was not enough to carry though to his 11:35
show, which was already from the start really framed by his fill-in gig for
Carson much more than his favorite-guest status on Letterman.

I have been busier than usual the last few weeks, and have not really been
following closely the march to Leno's last show which I guess is tonight. I
am going to DVR it and watch it over the weekend I guess. But I am working
from home today, and am noticing on the internet that Leno seems to have
been doing something of a good-bye media tour, much of it seemingly
dedicated to trying to frame his image and defend himself from Conan,
Kimell and Dave.
