Especially because (a) while the average viewer may not know the name of the producer or the head writer, the audience does know the the on-air staff, and they really should be acknowledged; (b) former bandleader Kevin Eubanks was mentioned; (c) Jay, as he often does during his desk chats, turned away from the camera to address part of his speech to Rickey; and (d) there was a bit of a controversy a few years ago when Rickey left "Idol" and Seacrest never mentioned him on the final show. (It was Simon Cowell's last "Idol" too, and while a big tribute was offered to Simon, Rickey was never mentioned and was reportedly angry. However, Rickey and his band are now returning to "Idol," so apparently all is forgiven.) Not that I'm a big fan of Rickey Minor - his band was fine but not extraordinary (though with a much larger repertoire than Eubanks' repetitive band), and he never displayed an ounce of the personality or chemistry that Eubanks brought to the sidekick role - but I thought he deserved a little more respect given the circumstances. (BTW, in light of Harold Wheeler's dismissal from DWTS, Minor deserves credit for having the clout to maintain a large band on two major network series.) Having said all that, I thought Jay's final speech was quite heartfelt and touching. (I've replayed it several times already.) Jay thanked the audience for its loyalty, and it's genuine moments like this which show why he earned - and deserved - such loyalty for 22 years. Here's my prediction for Fallon's first Tonight Show: Jay comes out after the monologue to slow jam the news. Just a hunch. -Tim
