Following up on the topic of Russian state media, here's a well-written
Times article (how rare is that?) citing several recent examples of the
Russian state interfering with the supposedly free press, most recently one
news outlet's chief having to resign after the website released an
interview with one of Ukraine's leaders (deemed an extremist/terrorist by
the Russian government).

"Godfather" fans might recall the expression "hitting the mattresses," a
reference to hiding out when the pressure is on. What I'm hearing from
friends a hemisphere away is a tendency to flee the cities right now. Many
Russian families have a "dacha" which is little more than a Unabomber-sized
shack or, if you must, a summer home. Often lacking in amenities and
creature comforts, dachas are in very remote locations in the woods or near
lakes. In short, people are heading to their dachas well ahead of the
summer season, because when trouble brews in Russia, it hits the cities
first. If I'm bureau chief of CNN, BBC, or any news organization with a
Eurasia contingent, I'm trying right now to get as many contacts as I can
in those cities, shipping in sat. phones and laptops with Skype capability,
because the media's going to have a blackout soon, and that's when things
are going to get real over there.
