Part of the homogenized look is so on-air talent can pretend to be places they're not. For instance, LA's Fritz Coleman was also doing the weather for San Diego for a while (not sure if he still is). Although he was in LA, the SD anchors would turn to face the weather wall and banter with him as though he was there.
I'm on a bit of a Tom Snyder kick the last few days, but this reminds me of one story he told of a fight he got into with a news director. In Tom's words, "the minute you try to fool the viewer, it's all over, kid."
