As was noted in one of the articles linked by Bob, the Super Bowl is played in the year after the regular season. As the 2014 Super Bowl wraps up the 2013 season, using the year would get confusing, so the NFL just numbers the Super Bowl and they probably use Roman numerals to class it up.
